How I Encountered God in a Moment of Despair and Crisis

A Personal Testimony of Faith, Healing, and the Presence of the Holy Spirit

My encounter with God during a moment of deep despair became the turning point that transformed my understanding of faith, healing, and the Holy Spirit. Today, as I begin writing about my Christian faith, I would like to share the extraordinary experience that led me to believe in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. I also hope to offer some insight into a question that has long intrigued many believers: What is the true nature of the Holy Spirit?

What follows is not a theological argument or an interpretation drawn from religious scholarship. It is a personal account of events that profoundly transformed my understanding of life, faith, and the existence of God.

A Life Without Faith

Until my early thirties, when I was working as a newspaper journalist, I was an atheist who knew virtually nothing about God or Jesus Christ.

I believed that God did not exist and that human beings were simply products of natural evolution, descended from earlier primate ancestors.

During my graduate and doctoral studies, my intellectual interests centered on literature, philosophy, and the history of ideas. Much of my thinking was influenced by philosophers and writers whose works questioned traditional religious beliefs or explored human existence apart from divine revelation.

Hegel, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Franz Kafka were among the thinkers and writers whose works occupied my attention.

At that time, religion held little meaning for me. I sought answers to the mysteries of existence through human reason, intellectual inquiry, and philosophical reflection.

My personal life, however, was increasingly troubled.

I smoked three to four packs of cigarettes a day and drank alcohol frequently. My health deteriorated steadily, and I began suffering from severe pain in my chest and lungs.

Walking long distances or climbing stairs became increasingly difficult. Hiking in the mountains, something that requires considerable physical endurance, was almost unimaginable.

I later learned through medical examinations that I had developed severe emphysema.

As my lung function continued to decline, the pain in my chest became so intense that I could scarcely sleep at night. Strangely, smoking seemed to provide temporary relief from the discomfort, which only reinforced my dependence on cigarettes.

My physical condition worsened, and with it came an overwhelming sense of hopelessness.

My Encounter with God: The Morning That Changed My Life

One morning, after another sleepless night, I rose before dawn and sat leaning against the wall in a room enveloped in complete darkness.

My mind wandered through a succession of troubling thoughts.

Why must life be so exhausting and burdensome? Am I destined to live without any real purpose, only to leave this world having accomplished nothing of lasting value?

As the minutes passed, my despair deepened. Eventually, my thoughts seemed to dissolve altogether, leaving me in a state of profound mental emptiness.

It was Monday, April 13, 1992, during Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter.

The time was approximately six o’clock in the morning.

Is this how my life will come to an end?

I could see no hope for the future. Everything seemed dark and desolate.

And then, something extraordinary happened.

The darkened room seemed to fade away, and before my eyes appeared a vast, barren wilderness.

Suddenly, from a distant point slightly to my left, a brilliant light flashed across the landscape.

From within that radiance, a figure emerged.

He walked toward me with astonishing speed and, within moments, stood directly before me.

I raised my head, hoping to see his face, but I could discern no recognizable physical form.

At that very instant, words escaped my lips without any conscious intention on my part.

“Oh! It is God!”

I immediately fell to the ground and cried out:

“God, please forgive my sins.”

Never in my life had I uttered such a prayer. Yet the words came spontaneously, as though they had arisen from somewhere beyond my conscious mind.

Tears began streaming uncontrollably down my face.

Then, without warning, an intense wave of heat swept through my body, from the soles of my feet to the crown of my head.

At the same moment, I felt a powerful sensation in my back, as though something that had long been lodged within me was suddenly being expelled.

Years later, after my faith had deepened and I had become familiar with the Scriptures, I came to interpret this experience as the departure of an evil spiritual presence from within me.

What followed was equally extraordinary.

My body suddenly felt so light that I could almost have risen into the air.

And the severe chest pain that had tormented me for so long vanished in an instant.

An Astonishing Recovery

From that day forward, I experienced a remarkable improvement in my physical condition.

The pain that had once made even ordinary physical activity difficult was gone.

Over the years, I found myself able to run, climb mountains, and ascend several flights of stairs at a brisk pace without the breathlessness and chest discomfort that had previously dominated my life.

Even when running quickly, it was my legs that grew tired, not my lungs.

To me, this transformation was nothing short of miraculous.

During a comprehensive medical examination last year, I underwent another detailed examination of my lungs.

The results still showed extensive traces of the damage left by emphysema.

According to the physician’s written assessment, my lungs bore evidence of severe damage from the past, but the affected areas were no longer active.

The structural scars of the disease remained, yet the symptoms that had once devastated my life were no longer present.

I have never forgotten that morning in April.

I believe that God intervened in my life when I had reached the very limits of despair.

The Bible Opened Before My Eyes

An open Bible on a desk radiating brilliant white light as a man looks on in awe.
An artistic depiction of the moment Scripture came alive before my eyes.

That same evening, I happened to pick up a Bible that my elder brother had given me.

Until then, I had shown little interest in the Scriptures and knew almost nothing about their teachings.

But when I opened the Bible, I experienced another astonishing moment.

It seemed as though a brilliant white radiance was pouring from its pages, and the words of Scripture suddenly came alive before my eyes.

An overwhelming thought filled my mind:

How could such beautiful and precious words have been hidden within this book all along? Why had I never thought to read it before?

What had previously seemed distant and unfamiliar now appeared filled with meaning.

Without instruction from a pastor, theologian, or religious teacher, I found myself drawn deeply into the Scriptures.

I began reading them on my own, with a clarity of understanding that astonished me.

As my faith developed, I came to believe that it was the Holy Spirit who had opened my heart and mind to the Word of God.

The Bible had not changed.

What had changed was my ability to perceive its spiritual meaning.

A Presence I Could Not See

For approximately three days after that extraordinary encounter, I remained intensely aware of an unseen presence beside me.

I could not perceive this presence with my physical eyes, yet I felt that a being of immense power was near, watching over me and sustaining me.

The sensation was so vivid that I could scarcely doubt it.

Only later, as my faith matured, did I come to understand this presence as God or Jesus Christ.

About three days after my initial encounter, I was sitting at my desk reading the Bible when I suddenly heard a voice.

It was gentle yet solemn, filled with both tenderness and unmistakable authority.

The voice asked:

“Even now, do you still find it difficult to believe in Me?”

Startled, I looked around the room, trying to discover where the voice had come from.

But there was no one there.

Caught completely off guard, I managed only a hesitant reply:

“Yes… I believe.”

Later, when I had regained my composure, I felt that my response had been painfully inadequate.

I wanted to express my faith more fully, with the conviction that had begun to take root within me.

And so I answered again, this time with deliberate sincerity:

“Lord, I believe in You as surely as I see the sun by day and the moon by night.”

After that, the extraordinary sense of His immediate presence gradually departed.

Yet I believed that He had not left me alone.

He had left me with the Holy Spirit.

Three Years in the Presence of the Holy Spirit

For approximately three years, I experienced what I understood to be the continuing presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

During this period, I encountered extraordinary events that seemed to defy ordinary explanation—experiences that many people might never encounter even once in a lifetime.

I sought to live according to the teachings of the Bible and to follow what I believed to be God’s will.

Through these experiences, I gradually developed a deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit’s role in the life of a believer.

I came to believe that the Holy Spirit is not merely an abstract religious idea, an emotional state, or a symbolic expression of divine influence.

Rather, I understood the Holy Spirit to be the living presence of God, possessing divine power and working within human beings to guide, enlighten, and transform them.

Yet receiving the Holy Spirit does not make a human being incapable of sin.

Even the Apostle Paul, whose life was profoundly shaped by the Holy Spirit, spoke openly of the struggle between the desire to do good and the weaknesses of human nature.

Human beings remain imperfect, even when they sincerely seek to follow God.

Jesus Christ, however, occupies a unique place in the Christian understanding of salvation.

Although He entered the world in human form, He was without sin and was fully united with the divine nature.

In Him, I came to recognize the perfect revelation of God.

Understanding the Holy Trinity Through Experience

Through these events, I gradually came to understand what Christianity calls the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

This understanding did not initially arise from theological instruction, formal religious education, or conversations with church leaders.

It emerged from the experiences through which I believe God revealed Himself to me.

I came to understand that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are not three separate gods, but one God, eternally united in divine being.

Each is distinct, yet they share the one divine nature.

Looking back on my experiences, I understood their significance in this way.

I believe that God, through His divine grace and the saving presence of Jesus Christ, brought healing into my life when I was physically and spiritually broken.

I also believe that the Holy Spirit opened my understanding of Scripture, guided my conscience, strengthened my faith, and helped me begin a new life centered upon the Word of God.

For me, the reality of the Holy Spirit was no longer a matter of abstract speculation.

It had become an essential part of my lived experience.

From Despair to Faith

More than three decades have passed since that April morning in 1992.

Yet the memory remains as vivid as though it happened yesterday.

I was once a man who believed that God did not exist.

I trusted in human reason and intellectual inquiry, yet found myself overwhelmed by physical suffering and a profound sense of emptiness.

At the lowest point of my life, when I could no longer see any reason for hope, I encountered what I believe was the presence of God.

That experience transformed not only my religious beliefs but also my understanding of human existence.

I do not expect every reader to interpret my experience in the same way.

Faith is deeply personal, and the journey toward God may take different forms in different lives.

Nevertheless, I have chosen to share my testimony because I believe that the events of that morning carry a meaning far beyond my own circumstances.

For those who are struggling with despair, suffering, or uncertainty, I hope my story may offer a measure of encouragement.

For those who wonder whether God truly exists or whether the Holy Spirit remains active in the world today, I offer these memories as a sincere account of what I experienced.

I was not searching for a religious revelation that morning.

I was simply a man exhausted by suffering, sitting alone in the darkness, wondering whether life held any meaning at all.

Yet it was precisely in that darkness that I believe God came to meet me.

And from that moment, my life was never the same.
